A Reliable Police K9 Starts With the Right Dog—and a Prepared Handler

Choosing your next police K9 is a decision your agency will depend on for years. You need a dog prepared for operational demands and a handler equipped to make sound decisions when it matters.

At Highland Canine Training, LLC, our research-backed approach guides how we select and train our police dogs, with a focus on reliability in operational environments. We take the time to build the skills your dog needs because dependable performance deserves more than a rushed training timeline.

That same commitment shapes our handler education. Our programs go beyond standard handling instruction, covering in-depth concepts often reserved for advanced courses or trainer schools. Handlers learn to read their dogs more effectively, solve training problems, develop meaningful training challenges, and reduce unnecessary handler influence. The result is a more capable handler with greater confidence in real-world deployments.

For handlers, that means a deeper understanding of their K9 partner. For administrators, it means investing in both the dog and the education that helps the team succeed.

Before you choose your next police dog, learn what makes our selection, training, and educational programs different.

Police Dogs and Handler Training Built for Your Agency

A well-trained police dog is only part of an effective K9 team. Your handler needs the knowledge to interpret the dog’s behavior, make informed deployment decisions, and keep the team progressing long after the initial course ends.

At Highland Canine Training, LLC, our Police K9 handler courses go beyond basic handling skills. From core fundamentals and odor theory to preparing to explain their K9’s work in court, handlers develop a deeper understanding of how and why their dogs work. They learn to recognize unnecessary handler influence, solve training problems, and create challenges that prepare the team for operational demands. That knowledge builds confidence in both daily training and real-world deployments.

We offer police dogs for sale and customized training to meet your agency’s specific needs. Whether you are establishing a K9 unit or selecting your next partner, talk with us about your operational requirements and purchase timeline.

Yes. We encourage agencies to visit our facility, evaluate dogs, watch demonstrations, and speak with our trainers. A visit gives your agency an opportunity to discuss its requirements and better understand our dogs, training methods, and handler education.

Our experienced staff works with your agency to understand the dog’s intended assignment and the handler’s needs. We guide you through the selection process to help identify a suitable match for your K9 team.

Most of our dogs come from Europe. Many of our Labrador Retrievers, pointers, and Golden Retrievers come from trusted breeders in the United States and Canada.

We prescreen all dogs for health and provide passports and X-rays as part of the purchase documentation.

Nearly two decades of research and analytics inform how we select and train our dogs. Our approach focuses on developing reliability in operational environments.

We create training scenarios in real-world settings that closely replicate the conditions teams encounter during deployments. This preparation is paired with in-depth handler education so handlers understand how to read their dogs, solve problems, and maintain meaningful training.

Timing depends on your agency’s selection requirements, requested training, and handler school availability. Our dogs generally receive 16–20 weeks of training, but that does not necessarily mean your agency will wait that long.

We continually train dogs in our kennels, so dogs are at different stages of preparation when agencies inquire. Custom training requests may take longer. Our staff can discuss current availability and estimate a timeline for your purchase.

Yes. We can tailor training to your agency’s operational needs. Discuss your required detection or patrol capabilities, deployment environments, and other priorities with our staff so we can outline the appropriate training and estimated timeline.

Yes. A deposit of 50% of the purchase price is required to hold a particular dog. Contact our staff to discuss selection and reservation details.

Yes. We do not sell trained dogs without handler school. Your agency must send a handler through our training program as part of the purchase.

This requirement helps prepare the handler to work effectively with the dog and continue developing the team after returning to the agency.

Single-purpose handler courses last three weeks, and dual-purpose handler courses last four weeks. Handler schools are typically scheduled four to five times per year.

These course lengths do not include the required online training completed before arrival. We provide that preparation, which handlers can complete at their own pace from anywhere.

Our handler education goes beyond basic handling instruction. Courses cover core fundamentals, odor theory, reading canine behavior, problem solving, designing effective training challenges, and reducing unnecessary handler influence.

Handlers also receive instruction in report writing and courtroom survival to help them prepare to explain their K9 work in court. Our goal is to develop knowledgeable handlers with greater confidence in training and operational deployments.

Teams receive certification through Highland Canine Training. We also encourage agencies to pursue third-party certification.

Contact our staff to discuss the training and certification needs for your team’s assignment.

We provide a two-year health guarantee against congenital health defects, backed by replacement of the dog at no cost under the guarantee. The applicable terms are outlined in your agency’s bid.

We offer free in-service and brush-up training for the lifetime of the dog. This gives your team opportunities to address training challenges and continue developing its skills after handler school.

The agency is responsible for travel and lodging expenses when attending follow-up training.

Yes. We encourage prospective buyers to request client references. Speaking with other agencies can help you evaluate their experience with our dogs, handler education, and continued training support.
